Timeline
- 29 Sep 2026: an employee of the Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia in Irkutsk is hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Russian media report that a test tube believed to contain plague bacteria was broken.
- 1-2 Oct 2026: the patient dies overnight. Nearly 200 people (about 189) are placed under medical observation.
- 5 Oct 2026: the US State Department and White House are reported to be monitoring the situation. No evidence of person-to-person spread has been reported.
